Project/Unit Description

As one of eight GTRI laboratories, the Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory (EOSL) focuses on optical systems engineering research for sponsors across the Department of Defense. Additionally, the EOSL research portfolio includes lidar, sensing and seekers, photonic devices and microelectronics, and survivability-related modeling, simulation, and analysis for multi-spectral applications. Within EOSL, the Electro-Optical Systems Innovation Division (EOSID) is composed of approximately 50 full-time researchers working on the analysis, design, development, prototyping, and testing of fully integrated active and passive optical systems, including lidars, imaging sensors, and other technologies. The division chief will have oversight of five branches: Analysis and Physics; Systems Engineering; Opto-Mechanical; Embedded Systems; and Processing, Exploitation, and Dissemination.

Job Purpose

The Division Chief is the principal leader and manager of all Division activities, while also maintaining a research role including contributions to sponsored research projects. The Division Chief sets the vision and strategy for the Division, provides oversight and direction for research projects in the Division, manages the personnel in the Division, and maintains ultimate responsibility for all of the financial and administrative operations of the Division. The Division Chief acts as liaison between the Division and Lab Leadership, other Divisions, and the rest of GTRI.

Key Responsibilities
  • Management responsibilities:
    • Develop strategic vision and execution plan for the division in conjunction with Laboratory and Directorate Leadership
    • Oversee of Division project and operational activities
    • Lead contract development activities and interface with sponsors
    • Manage personnel including hiring, performance evaluations, staffing, career development, etc.
    • Manage budgets, resources, and compliance with policies and procedures
    • Develop research collaborations with other GTRI laboratories, Georgia Tech academic faculty, and outside organizations * Mentor Division personnel
  • Research Responsibilities:
    • Research activities supporting sponsored projects
    • Project management of specific research projects
    • Develop and execute internal research and development programs supporting the division strategic vision
    • Develop proposals for new research efforts
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • 5+ years of demonstrated recent experience in leading research projects and managing researchers in EOSID core research areas, including: opto-electronics, opto-mechanics, or opto-analysis
  • 5+ years demonstrated experience working classified projects for a government research lab or working on classified DoD sponsored research programs
  • 3+ years demonstrated experience in contract development, program management, and personnel management
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as evidenced by conference presentations or papers.
  • Experience leading business development activities and sponsor engagement
  • Experience writing white papers and/or proposals
  • Experience authoring and delivering technical briefings to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD TS/SCI Security Clearance

Preferred Qualifications
  • Active TS/SCI Clearance
  • Experience in organizational management at GTRI or similar institution
  • 9+ years of demonstrated recent experience in leading research projects and managing researchers in EOSID core research areas: opto-electronics, opto-mechanics, or opto-analysis
  • 5+ years' experience defining, refining, and driving the strategic thrust of an organization at the branch or division level
  • 5+ years' experience briefing program activities directly to senior level sponsors within the government
  • Demonstrated national recognition in the industry, as evidenced by noteworthy journal and/or conference publications, session leadership at national symposia, membership on national committees, and involvement in relevant professional societies at the Senior-level or above.

Education and Length of Experience

  • 9 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree in Optics, Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Machine Learning, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related degree
  • 7 years of related experience with a Masters' degree in Optics, Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Machine Learning, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related degree
  • 4 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Optics, Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Machine Learning, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related degree

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required
