Essential Job Duties
The University Advancement (UA) Intern position provides a unique opportunity to develop a range of skills during a 10 month appointment at NC State. In addition, he/she benefits from access to professional development, training, mentoring and coaching and the opportunity to build an invaluable, supportive network of advancement professionals.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Talent Management, the UA Intern works within assigned areas of University Advancement, gaining experience and developing skills in annual giving, constituent engagement, stewardship, events and volunteer management. The breadth of the experience provides the UA Intern with a well-rounded view of institutional advancement and the role it plays in supporting NC State.

As directed, the UA Intern will assist colleagues with programming that involves an integrated approach based on best practices and includes strategies that foster a sense of community and encourage meaningful participation through dialogue, volunteerism, and philanthropy with the ultimate goal of increasing overall participation and giving among the NC State community. Internal and external events, group meetings and programmatic projects will also be tasked to the position to oversee and/or coordinate with colleagues in University Advancement and across campus.

The ability to provide high-level customer service, organize and prioritize work flows, manage projects in order to meet varying deadlines and needs of the University Advancement team is critical. The UA Intern performs these duties in a professional, confidential and positive manner, and demonstrates integrity, good judgment, and the ability to work well with a team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Actively support and collaborate with University Advancement staff, especially those responsible for engagement and frontline fundraising, to promote comprehensive understanding of the University's mission and priorities, increase engagement, and build positive and productive relationships among and between constituencies.
  • Support the engagement of constituents in the life of the University through consistent and positive communication using electronic, print, and social media, exceptional customer service, and meaningful opportunities for volunteerism, service, personal and professional development, events and programs.
  • Work closely with various staff members to ensure schedules and strategies are integrated and consistent as they relate to projects, initiatives and general workflow; provide assistance and guidance as needed.
  • Develop and maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry best practices and trends related to institutional advancement and fundraising specifically.
  • Make donor referrals to University Development and campus-wide gift officers as appropriate.
  • Capture contact, biographical, and career information of constituents via programs, correspondence, contact reports and events to assist with accurate and complete records of constituents in the customer relations management (CRM) database.
  • Represent the mission, vision and values of NC State at all times.
  • Attend university-wide events and University Advancement related meetings.
  • Complete all assignments in a timely manner.
  • Undertake additional special projects as directed.

Perform other duties as required or assigned. Attend a variety of events throughout the year. Regular travel and occasional night and weekend work may be required.
Minimum Experience/Education
Post-baccalaureate credentials or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required. One or more years of volunteer and/or work experience in non-profit development or a closely related field (such as sales or marketing) is preferred.

  • Familiarity with NC State University and the Triangle
Required License or Certification
A valid North Carolina Driver's License is required within 60 days of the start date. This license must be maintained as a condition of employment.
