About the Opportunity
The AWS Network and System Administrator is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining AWS Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs) and all associated components within the VPC environment that will support the Data, Visualization, and Analytics platform needs of the System Office and partnering institutions. Primary job duties include the following:

Systems & Infrastructure Admin:

  • AWS VPC Setup and Configuration: Design, deploy, and configure AWS VPCs according to organizational requirements, ensuring secure and efficient network connectivity between AWS resources and on-premise infrastructure.
  • Network Architecture: Develop network architecture designs, including subnets, routing tables, security groups, and network access control lists (ACLs), to support the organization's applications and services hosted in the AWS cloud.
  • Security and Compliance: Implement security best practices and compliance standards within the AWS VPC environment, including identity and access management (IAM), encryption, network segmentation, and intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS).
  • AWS Component Management: Manage and maintain all AWS components within the VPC environment, including but not limited to EC2 instances, RDS databases, ELB/ALB load balancers, Route 53 DNS, VPC peering connections, VPN connections, and Direct Connect.

Optimizing Performance & Operating Continuity:

  • Monitoring and Performance Tuning: Implement monitoring solutions to track the performance, availability, and utilization of AWS resources. Conduct performance tuning and optimization activities to ensure the reliability and scalability of the AWS infrastructure.
  • Backup and Disaster Recovery: Develop and implement backup and disaster recovery strategies for AWS resources, including automated backups, snapshots, and disaster recovery plans to minimize downtime and data loss.
  • Troubleshooting and Incident Response: Diagnose and resolve network and system-related issues in the AWS environment, collaborating with cross-functional teams and AWS support as necessary. Develop incident response procedures and participate in incident response activities.
  • Documentation and Training: Maintain comprehensive documentation of AWS VPC configurations, network diagrams, procedures, and policies. Provide training and knowledge transfer to internal teams on AWS best practices and procedures.

This position may be eligible for a hybrid or remote work arrangement, consistent with System Office policy. This position is eligible for the System Office's performance-based bonus award program, which is offered annually contingent upon budgetary resources pursuant to UNC System's non-base salary compensation policy for EHRA employees.

About the UNC System Office
The UNC System Office includes the offices of the President and other senior administrators of the multi-campus University of North Carolina System. The UNC System is a treasured public institution dedicated to serving the people of North Carolina through world-class teaching, research, and community engagement. Today, nearly 250,000 students are enrolled in our 16 universities across the state and at the NC School of Science and Mathematics. System Office staff is responsible for executing the policies of the UNC Board of Governors and providing University-wide leadership in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, long-range planning, student affairs, research, legal affairs, and government relations. The UNC System Office also has administrative oversight of a number of University affiliates, including PBS North Carolina, the North Carolina Arboretum, the NC State Education Assistance Authority, and University of North Carolina Press.

About the Team
The Information Technology division works collaboratively with UNC constituent institutions to help ensure efficient and cost-effective integration of new technologies that meet common and unique needs of the 17 institutions. The division is also charged with managing the highly complex enterprise-wide data modernization efforts that will enable the System to better monitor, evaluate, and manage our enterprise; as well as facilitate timely comparisons across the 17 institutions and create better data-sharing capabilities for smarter and more efficient data-driven decisions.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
Masters' and 2-4 years' experience; or Bachelors and 3-5 years' experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.

Required Competencies
*Advanced AWS training desired *Proven experience in designing, implementing, and managing AWS VPC environments and associated components *Strong understanding of networking principles and protocols, including TCP/IP, DNS, VPN, and BGP *Hands-on experience with AWS services such as EC2, VPC, RDS, ELB/ALB, Route 53, IAM,CloudWatch, etc. *Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) for automation and infrastructure as code (IaC) tools such as AWS CloudFormation or Terraform *Knowledge of security best practices and compliance standards in the context of AWS environments, such as PCI DSS, HIPAA, GDPR, etc. *Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex network and system issues in a cloud environment *Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills
*AWS certification(s) such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified SysOps Administrator, or AWS Certified Advanced Networking *Experience with hybrid cloud architectures, connecting on-premise infrastructure to AWS using VPN or Direct Connect *Familiarity with containerization technologies such as Docker and container orchestration platforms like Kubernetes *Knowledge of other cloud providers (e.g., Azure, Google Cloud Platform) and multi-cloud architecture best practices
