Position Overview

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Division of Institutional Advancement advances a culture of philanthropy through the engagement of alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents and friends (both individually and in the corporate community) in support of the Institution's mission of preparing students to become global leaders and practitioners who transform communities. By using creative strategies to enhance the University's image, the office promotes the overall mission of North Carolina Central University to its external publics in order to solicit and acquire philanthropic support

Primary Purpose of Position
The Director of Development will manage a portfolio to identify, qualify, cultivate and steward potential major gift donors with a focus on increasing the pipeline of major gift ($25,000 and above) prospects and private support for the School of Business. This position will partner with the Assistant VC of Development, Dean, department heads, faculty, staff, and volunteer advisory boards for the School of Business for philanthropic support priorities, and will have regular formal strategy meetings with the dean and Assistant VC. This position reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Candidate must demonstrate the ability to design and implement effective cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies.

Excellent communication skills with the ability to speak credibly about higher education and the aspirations of the University and School of Business.

Ability to work in a system that emphasizes measurable objectives, including goals and metrics for major gift activity and dollars raised.

Proficiency in Outlook, Excel, Word.

Experience using Raiser's Edge or other Advancement databases.

Ability to work with diverse constituents while multi-tasking priorities.

Minimum Education/Experience
A Bachelor's degree with three to five (3 to 5) years of experience in major gift fundraising with a solid track record of securing major gifts, or related and transferable experience from corporate, community or philanthropic organizations.

The use of Raiser's Edge for all documentation of fundraising activity, proposals, and secured gifts is required.

Travel required including some overnights and weekends.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Responsible for the management of 75-125 potential or actual donors.

Make personal contact, including in-person visits, with a portfolio of individuals and, when appropriate, corporate representatives and foundation officers to build relationships and secure major gifts for the School of Business in coordination with the Dean and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development.

Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Metrics for this position will be based on documented meaningful engagement with qualified prospects, proposals, and secured gifts based on fiscal year fundraising goals.

Serve as an integral team member for the Dean of the School of Business and work closely with the leadership, faculty, and staff in the School to develop and advance fundraising strategies. Participate in strategic engagement opportunities for the School.

Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Assist in the oversight of the School of Business Advisory Council and participate in volunteer leadership activities that engage and cultivate relationships.

Work closely with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development to complete fundraising projects related to the School of Business. Work collaboratively with colleagues in Institutional Advancement.

Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
In addition, the Director of Development will attend school, departmental, and university alumni and development functions as appropriate.

Other duties as assigned.
