Position Summary

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

Job Description-Job Duties and/or Responsibilities:
The GA - Mental Health and Academic Support will assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of various initiatives and programs in the areas of mental health, wellbeing, and academic support.
The GA - Mental Health and Academic Support will have two primary areas of responsibility: (1) Mental Health and Academic Support and (2) General Administrative Responsibilities. The position will carry specific duties and responsibilities as follows:
Mental Health and Academic Support:
  • Help support the Assistant Dean with tasks related to outreach and follow-up with students participating in the Mental Health and Academic Support Process.
  • Conduct weekly student appointments for general academic concerns.
  • Provide information on resources, referrals, support, and advocacy pertaining to mental health/wellbeing.
  • Meet individually with students, actively listen to their issues, and assist them in prioritizing, problem solving, and success planning.
  • Serve as an advocate to students, faculty, staff, and others who may need assistance managing a wide range of academic and personal issues.
  • Host drop-in hours to meet with students in need of support and connection to resources.
  • Have knowledge of and work closely with other Student Affairs offices to support students' needs.
  • Coordinate campus-wide events in an effort to build and/or strengthen partnerships and actively engage stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned.
General Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Update Mental Health and Academic Support documents and send to students.
  • Manage, update, and provide presentations as requested for classes, organizations, and departments on Cares-Spartans Supporting Spartans, DOS Culture of Care, and other student support presentations as necessary.
  • Research and update materials and information regarding campus support and advocacy.
  • Respond to inquiries about the department and its processes to persons either in person, by phone, or by email.
  • Work on special projects as assigned by the professional staff as needed.
  • Participate in University-wide committees associated with the office.
  • Review and evaluate the effectiveness of procedures and processes of the office.
  • Attend regular staff meetings.

The philosophy of the Dean of Students Office is that graduate students deserve challenge, support, supervision, resources, professional development opportunities, and mentoring. Graduate students should enjoy their work in the fast-paced work environment, feel an active part of the office, and gain a well-rounded professional experience in the field of student affairs.
The Graduate Assistant is responsible for working 20 hours per week. The Dean of Students Office is open Monday through Friday during regular business hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This position would typically not be required to work earlier/later or outside of those times; however, some instances may arise outside of regular business hours. Any scheduled time outside of regular business hours will be discussed with the GA in advance. Based on the demands of the office and the schedule of the GA, work schedules must be approved by the GA's supervisor each semester in advance.

Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
  • Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
  • Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
  • Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
  • Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
Additional Minimum Qualifications
Preferred Skills or Prerequisites:
* Ability to work with and provide support to students facing a variety of challenges and hardships.
* Knowledge of trends and issues related to mental health and student support - highly preferred.
* Ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, develop new initiatives, and interact effectively in an advisory capacity with diverse students is required.
* Ability to work with diverse student communities.
* Ability to work in a team environment and independently.
* Strong time management, organizational and programming skills.
* Strong presentation, communication, and written skills.
