Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides psychological services to all students enrolled at UNC Chapel Hill who have paid the student health fee. The psychological/counseling services provide individual, couples, and group therapy, same day triage appointments, crisis intervention, outreach services and medication evaluation and management. The team also provides risk assessment evaluation for the Dean of Students office.

Campus Health Services and CAPS is a unique health care entity and position duties do not necessarily compare to an academic department or other service units of the University. We face many challenges associated with healthcare delivery that most job descriptions do not address, including Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) accreditation, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance, CPT and ICD-9 coding, billing, electronic health record, and electronic insurance filing.
Position Summary
The Patient Relations Representative position will be responsible for communicating with a diverse group of personalities in a courteous and professional manner by phone and direct interactions. She/He must possess the skill to multi-task assignments and prioritize many tasks including:
- Answer phone lines and demonstrate appropriate phone etiquette
- Schedule new and return appointments
- Act as a greeter for Counseling and Psychological Services
- Complete check-in process including verification of demographic information, student eligibility and scan insurance cards
- Insurance verification
- Cross train with other departments front desks in Campus Health
- Follow up on all inquires
- Provide excellent customer service to all patients, staff and parents
This position will also occasionally provide cross coverage to other Campus Health Service clinics as needed.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The competencies demonstrated in assessing problems and identifying an appropriate solution are required for this position. The selected candidate must have demonstrated excellent customer service skills, interpersonal, public relations, and computer skills. Prior experience working at the front desk in a medical office or hospital setting is essential. Attention to detail is required, as is experience verifying active insurance coverage with payers and entering plan numbers and claim submission address information from an insurance card into a practice management system. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential to the position.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Prefer experience of administrative, multiple phone line experience, and prior college health/healthcare setting experience.
