The Workplace Principal in the Workplace Design Group brings creative leadership with a strong sense of design and a commensurate portfolio. S/he sets the strategy, planning and design vision for the Workplace projects regionally across HDR and will collaborate and contribute to the design leadership of the local Interiors studio in alignment with firm-wide design goals and the vision set by the Director of Workplace Design. In collaboration with office and firm leadership, s/he provides inspiration and strategic design direction for projects; leads the recognition, development and mentoring of talent; and actively pursues new business opportunities. A Principal in the Workplace Design Group embodies high standards of design excellence and innovation, as well as an entrepreneurial approach to interior design as an integrated component of the firm's total design strategy.

The Workplace Principal will join the Director of Workplace Design in building Workplace as we expand this business group for HDR. This individual will partake in developing processes for Visioning and Strategic Planning sessions, as well as programming, all in efforts to cohesively flow into the conceptual design of our projects. The Workplace Principal will also contribute to the development of thought leadership pieces and presentations addressing current trends in Workplace Design and Strategic Planning. This candidate will be instrumental in supporting new business development activities as HDR builds our Corporate Commercial group in the local area, leveraging current contacts and extending opportunities to introduce HDR in this space. This individual will leverage the strengths of and collaborate with HDR's in-house human behavioral scientists, data scientists, and analysts to support the development of workplace strategies and solutions.

As part of a collaborative global practice, the Workplace Principal collaborates with the Interior Design Directors and Interior Design Principals, engages local market sector leadership, and draws upon the expertise of multiple disciplines; leveraging the firm's research, knowledge, and technical resources to deliver innovative and creative design solutions. S/he works with local marketing teams on fee proposals, RFP responses and targeted project pursuits.

In addition, the Workplace Principal in Raleigh will contribute to the to the growth and development the Civic and Community market sectors in Raleigh area. This includes participating in the development of new business relationships and opportunities with organizations and related institutions in the local and the regional market, the ability to win work, and to oversee that work in a senior leadership role.

Technical capabilities:

Although this is not a production focused position, it is critical that the Workplace Principal be able to leverage technology to present and document their ideas. The ability to produce presentation materials and workshop content is an important component of this position. Therefore, a working knowledge of Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp/ Rhino (or similar), the Adobe Creative Suite, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office suite is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • 15 years related experience
  • A minimum of 7 years project management experience
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, estimating and scheduling software (Primavera P3 or SureTrak preferred), project management software (Prolog preferred)
  • Must have the ability to interact with various design teams, have excellent organizational, project management and communication (both written and verbal) skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Architecture or Interior Design
  • A license/certification may be required
  • PMP certification
  • Local network and client relationships
