Overview

Davidson T&I seeks a recent graduate with an interest in and experience with how computational technologies can be effectively applied to instruction and research. The Instructional and Research Computing Fellow will serve in a capacity which supports scholarly & instructional activities at Davidson College. You will work closely with the T&I Research Computing System Administrator and other teams across T&I directly supporting students and colleagues throughout Academic Affairs.

As a fellow and a recent grad, we don't expect you to have experience with all of our platforms, or possess all of the necessary skills on day one. Your success is critical to our success. Davidson T&I is committed to investing the time and resources required to train and onboard all fellows. Eventually, if selected for this role, you'll grow into the strong technician and analyst we know you can be.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The primary tasks for this position can be broken into two large categories: Research Facilitation and Systems Administration.

A sample of your day-to-day work may include:

  • Writing documentation for use by researchers and faculty
  • General Linux administration and support
  • Investigating new technologies used for research computing
  • Research and Instructional software stack maintenance

Services you will be supporting:

  • JupyterHub - a web-based platform providing access to computational environments and resources
  • Galaxy - a web-based platform for data-intensive biomedical research
  • Purpose-built virtual machines for long-running tasks and instructional use
  • Scientific application development, consulting, and guidance
  • Computational resource recommendations and guidance
  • Management and storage of research data
  • Management of undergraduate research lab resources
  • Consultation and guidance regarding purchases for research computing hardware and instrumentation
  • Coordination with NCShare grant-funded initiatives (Science DMZ and Shared Compute)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Excellent problem solving and analytic capabilities with the ability to present complex ideas in a straightforward and understandable manner.
  • Excellent communication skills, allowing the Fellow to interface comfortably with colleagues and constituents inside and outside of Davidson T&I.
  • Curiosity and aptitude

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of relevant experience (student employment, coursework, or self-taught) in Linux administration.
  • Knowledge of, and direct experience with how high-performance computing solutions support instructional and research initiatives.
