Job Description Summary:We seek a Pilot-in-Command (PIC) to operate National Science Foundation (NSF)/National Center for Atmospheric Research(NCAR) aircraft, including EC-130Q and GV models, to support global research initiatives.

The role involves piloting missions frequently that encounter turbulent conditions, minimal instrument weather, nighttime operations, low-altitude flights, over-water crossings, and challenging terrain.

Our organization strictly adheres to IS-BAO (International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations) Stage three standards. Candidates should be prepared for operations in diverse locations around the world.

Additional Requirements:

  • Hold and maintain an FAA First Class Medical (which can be renewed every six months as necessary).

  • Maintain a valid United States Passport with no travel restrictions.

  • Have the ability to travel domestically or internationally for up to 16 weeks per year.

  • Live or be willing to move within two hours of KBJC. Some or all work must be performed on-site at RAF and/or at remote field sites that are domestic or international.

Key Responsibilities:

  • PIC/SIC of the NSF/NCAR EC-130Q and GV aircraft on various worldwide research deployments.

  • Plans, coordinates, & executes airborne research profiles, including collaboration with research teams or mission planners.

  • Reviews and evaluates the safety and feasibility of proposed research projects.

  • Ensures that NSF/NCAR aircraft are airworthy and operated in strict adherence to all aircraft and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) limits, regulations, and guidelines.

  • Prepares correspondence to the NSF to obtain diplomatic clearances for foreign countries.

  • Adheres to safety standards and protocols throughout the responsibilities and is committed to ensuring safe operations.

  • Assists in administering Safety Management System (to an ISBAO Stage 3 level) and Training program.

Who We'd Love to Join Our Team

Education & Experience REQUIRED:

  • Have more than five years of professional aviation experience.

  • Hold an FAA commercial pilot license with instrument/multi-engine land.

  • Have a minimum of 1,500 flight hours of total time as a pilot.

  • Have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities REQUIRED:

  • Thorough understanding and expert-level knowledge of FAA Regulations.

  • Effective management skills in overseeing aviation-related resources, and optimizing utilization and performance.

  • Proficiency in organizational and administrative processes, facilitating smooth and efficient operations.

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, enabling timely and effective resolution of challenges.

  • Self-sufficiency in conducting field programs, demonstrating the capability to work independently or collaborate with minimal onsite supervision.

  • Clear and articulate communication skills, with the ability to deliver comprehensive aviation-related briefings to scientific audiences across various topics.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Desired but not required:

  • Hold an FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate.

  • Have over 3,000 flight hours as an aircraft pilot.

  • Have a Gulfstream IV/V/G550 type rating.

  • Have an L382 type rating or significant experience with four-engine turboprop aircraft.

  • Have a minimum of 1,000 flight hours as pilot-in-command in multi-engine aircraft weighing over 12,500 pounds.

  • Have ten years of professional pilot experience, including extensive global operations.

  • Have Familiarity with Honeywell Flight Management Systems.

  • Have technical proficiency with Foreflight (Dispatch, RWA), Arcsky Manuals, Gmail/Drive, and Microsoft 365.

  • Have an understanding of ISBAO and Safety Management Systems.
