Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to maintain smooth and appropriate laboratory operations and perform complex experiments requiring adaptation and modification of existing procedures in a research laboratory. These positions are responsible for planning, developing research plans, reading literature relating to procedures, modifying and adapting procedures to suit particular project objectives, conducting experiments, recording and analyzing and interpreting data. Position may initiate minor deviations in experimental design as necessary. Work may include training and supervising the activities of others. The selected candidate's research and training experience must align with the mission of the Center of Electrochemical Dynamics and Reactions on Surfaces (CEDARS). The mission of CEDARS is an integrated theory-experiment approach to reveal how a catalyst splits water into hydrogen and oxygen at the molecular level.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina A&T State University is a public, doctoral high research land-grant University that enrolls approximately 13,560 students. The Center of Electrochemical Dynamics and Reactions on Surfaces (CEDARS) at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical (NCAT) State University is a multidisciplinary multi-institutional diverse team of faculty, researchers, and scientists from six universities and two national laboratories. The Center proposes to execute well-planned innovative research, education, and workforce development programs in electrochemical energy materials by establishing a Department of Energy Engineering Frontier Research Center (EFRC). The proposed research direction is different from the path commonly taken in the eld, where the emphasis has been on practical materials.
Work Hours Monday-Friday; 8am-5pm

Required Competency Technical Knowledge
Duties
Specific knowledge in the area of science related to the research project(s) essential to perform a variety of procedures. Knowledge and ability to independently operate instrumentation, equipment and/or software use for research objectives and independently adapt work process and methods based on findings and literature review with limited supervision. Knowledge of scientific concepts, principles, practices and methods used to conduct sound research; serves as a resource on technical and program-related issues for staff and others; knowledge of related technology, instruments and equipment. Very important to have the scientific knowledge to plan, direct and mange complex and/or multiple research programs and operations. It is also important to possess the knowledge to modify procedures in response to changing conditions.
Required Competency Research Design
Duties
Ability to search literature demonstrating an understanding of scientific, experimental and/or research theory to assist in the design of methods, procedures, and/or techniques. Ability to identify data to be collected and documented. Ability to identify resources needed to conduct experiments. Ability to monitor and report quality control measures.
Required Competency Conducting Experiments/Procedures
Duties
Ability to identify problems, troubleshoot and analyze variations observed and reported in regular testing protocols; ability to modify, refine or adapt techniques and procedures; ability to modify and/or adjust quality control measures. Ability to coordinate multiple, concurrent assignments or a multi-faceted project. Along with the ability to serve as an expert in conducting a specialized technique(s) or procedure(s).
Required Competency Laboratory Management
Duties
Ability to provide oversight and manage research laboratories, research stations including quality assurance programs and to manage compliance with safety measures and guidelines including those related to hazardous waste/materials. Ability to coordinate and manage facilities, equipment, supplies and related resources; ability to monitor and establish priorities in the use of resources including space, field, equipment, and/or facilities. Ability to ensure adherence to procedures and work standards and the ability to recommend changes, implement adjustments or changes and to anticipate changes.
Required Competency Communication
Duties
Ability to lead, consult, and make recommendations through effective communication about the laboratories in relation to the project. Ability to also lead exchange of research information through demonstrations and instruction. Ability to make presentations within department and/or at professional conferences. Also possess the ability to develop and coordinate instruction of others in the operations of specialized equipment and/or techniques.
Required Competency Data Analysis
Duties
Ability to collect and analyze data for accuracy, validity and integrity. Ability to review and recognize documentation which may lead to modification and adaptation of research methodologies; may require ability to collaborate with others. Ability to adapt and/or modify experimental methods based upon interpretation of data and the ability to coordinate to preparation of publications and/or reports; ability to make presentations within department and/or at professional conferences. Ability to assist in grant writing and proposal development.
Required Competency Instruction
Duties
Ability to train others in laboratory techniques and in the performance of complex tests and procedures and the proper use and care of specialized equipment. Ability to document how to conduct procedures; review and maintain correct standard operations, procedures and protocols.
