Job Overview

Under general supervision of department leadership, this position is responsible for the overall command and leadership of a shift work-group within the department. Provides mentorship, guidance and front-line supervision to Public Safety Officers in the performance of all duties and responsibilities related to the day to day protection and safety of patients, staff and visitors; as well as the security of hospital assets and information. Responsible for basic healthcare public safety duties, enforcement of the Criminal Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Special State Police Officer under MGL 22C-63 or Boston Special Officer under BPD Rule 400.

10pm-630am, weekends required: 5 days on, 2 days off.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Graduate of an approved Reserve Intermittent or Full Time Police Academy certified by the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC).

3. Licensed as a Special State Police Officer pursuant to MGL 22c Section 63.

4. Security or First Responder certifications such as CPR/AED, CPI NCI, AVADE, MOAB, MDTS, Stop the Bleed, Nasal Naloxone Certifications, and Hazmat.

5. Three (3) years of security operations experience with (1) year of hospital-based experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice.

2. Prior supervisory experience.

3. Experience in Critical Incident Planning, Intervention, and Management.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

1. Responsible for the overall operation & performance of assigned shift/work group. Continually monitors staff performance, and makes recommendations to department leadership concerning commendations, promotions, disciplinary action, and/or training. Participates in the employee performance appraisal process by giving department leadership feedback on staff performance.

2. Provides leadership and professional development guidance to all Public Safety Officers (sworn & non-sworn) and under their responsibility, including providing and documenting constructive feedback.

In the absence of more senior-level department leadership, acts as the senior most representative of the department on Public Safety related matters, disaster response, or other operational issues involving the department and Medical Center.

3.Participates in the organizational development process by participating in process change/improvement activities. Makes recommendation for process changes and takes corrective action concerning process deviations.

4. Reviews and approves all incident reports filed by staff under their responsibility. Initiates or delegates the commencement of initial investigations into incidents or crimes occurring on the Medical Center campus.

5. May perform basic public safety and police duties such as conducting internal and external patrols of all facilities and grounds, responding to and reporting on both routine and emergency calls for service, restraining violent patients and/or visitors; monitors assigned area for suspicious activity, prepares and completes all daily logs and incident reports and ensures accurate and detailed reports; and screening vendors and visitors entering the facility, ensuring compliance with established procedures.
