Minimum Qualifications
  • American Library Association accredited Master's Degree and/or other appropriate earned terminal degree from an accredited institution;
  • At least five (5) years of appropriate experience, unless there are exceptional circumstances;
  • Demonstrated experience curating manuscripts, rare books, printed material, media, and/or born-digital archives;

Description of the Department or Unit
The Appalachian State University Libraries consist of the Carol Grotnes Belk Library and Information Commons, the Nicholas Erneston Music Library, and the new Hickory Campus Library and Information Commons. Employing over 80 faculty and staff, the Libraries are an essential campus teaching and research partner inspiring and guiding all who pursue knowledge. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Anne Belk Distinguished Fellow and Curator for Distinctive Collections will foster, shape, and grow the (for more, ), which is a premiere interdisciplinary, multi-format research library for the study of the Appalachian Region, and the , which is one of the few public research collections documenting stock car and other forms of auto racing. To successfully engage in these efforts, the Curator will establish and maintain a visible presence on campus and beyond to engage and collaborate with diverse audiences and stakeholders, including the Stock Car Racing Collection Advisory Committee. The Curator will oversee collection development and all aspects of campus and public engagement involving the W.L. Eury Appalachian and Stock Car Racing Collections. The Curator will further be supported by multiple endowments which will fund the purchase of collection materials and a fellowship, which will fund research and creative activities as well as offer a supplement to the advertised salary. The position reports to the Coordinator of the Special Collections Research Center in the University Libraries and participates in the operations of the , which, in addition to the collections mentioned earlier, is also home to other two collecting areas: University Archives & Records Management Services and Rare Books & Manuscripts. Our collections date from the 1400s to the present and support teaching, learning, research, and scholarship at App State and beyond.

  • Curate rare books, printed materials, manuscripts, media, born-digital archives, and circulating materials for the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection and Stock Car Racing Collection by purchase or donation.
  • Identify potential donors of materials related to the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection and Stock Car Racing Collection, develop and maintain donor relationships.
  • Promote the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection and Stock Car Racing Collection through participation in special events, programs, and public relations activities.
  • Review, update, and maintain collection development policies for the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection and Stock Car Racing Collection in consultation with the other curatorial faculty on the team, which may include the Coordinator.
  • Participate in the University Libraries' Liaison Program including the Center for Appalachian Studies and the Appalachian Studies programs in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on manuscripts, rare books, and archives, including instruction using the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection and Stock Car Racing Collection.
  • Engage in an active program of scholarship and professional service as outlined in the University's Faculty Handbook and the Libraries' Foundational Documents.
  • Other duties as assigned that align with the needs of the Special Collections Research Center and/or University Libraries.

Suggested Salary Range The salary range for an Associate Professor is $62,000 - $65,000. Additional endowment payment for the distinguished fellowship ranges from $8,000 - $15,000. The actual endowment payment is based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
