Position Summary

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

The Academic Achievement Center cultivates the development of critical thinking skills and active learning through personal, collaborative exchanges between students, tutors, and staff. Our culture of learning is based on cognitive scaffolding that deepens the student's knowledge of specific subject material and facilitates increased self-awareness of how they learn in general.

Students discover the value of engaging actively in the learning process and develop the ability to adapt to the varying challenges of liberal arts coursework. Ultimately, students' participation in sessions results in greater self-confidence, independence, and improved academic performance.

The Academic Achievement Center supports UNCG students in meeting their academic goals via small group tutoring sessions, academic coaching, and campus workshops. Visit go.uncg.edu/aac_tutor for information about tutoring services.

This position reports directly to Erin Morrison, the Assistant Director for Tutoring Services.

Job Duties and/or Responsibilities:

  • Undergo training by the AAC staff. Develop an understanding of, and competency in best practices in peer tutoring, tutor training development and implementation, administrative procedures, and navigating TracCloud

  • Facilitate tutor training

  • Assist students with signing up for tutoring sessions

  • Conduct outreach to students about services, via email and classroom announcements

  • Assist supervisor with observations and feedback meetings with 30-40 tutors

  • Check in with tutors and provide support, encouragement, and feedback

  • Represent the Academic Achievement Center at campus events

  • Refer students to appropriate campus services when necessary

  • Meet weekly with supervisor to discuss projects and updates

  • Collect and analyze data related to student and tutor experience with our program

  • Assist with recruitment and hiring tutors

  • Other duties as assigned

Work Hours, Environment: 20 hours per week, with most hours scheduled during office hours (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.). Specific hours will be determined in cooperation with the supervisor. Rare evening and weekend work may be requested for special events. Workspace is in the AAC suite in Jackson Library.

Stipend: $14,000 for the academic year
The Academic Achievement Center does not provide tuition waivers.

Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
* Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
* Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
* Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
* Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.

  • Ability to interact with undergraduate students in a professional and personable manner
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Comfort with public speaking and presentation development
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Passion for learning and helping others to learn
  • Moderate computer ability Familiarity with Canvas, Canva, TracCloud, and Microsoft Suite or interest in learning these tools
  • Past tutoring experience (formal tutoring position, or informally helping classmates or friends to learn)
  • Interest in academic support
