Research is central to our mission in the College of Engineering at NC State. Through our work, we aim to find the best solutions to some of the world's most pressing problems. College researchers are developing cleaner energy, faster computers, stronger and lighter materials, and better medical devices, and much more.

Behind all this significant work are our researchers. Our faculty members are world leaders in research and innovation. They have won 25 NSF CAREER Awards since 2015. Nineteen are members of the National Academy of Engineering. Three are in the National Inventors Hall of Fame and ten are National Academy of Inventors Fellows.

The breadth of our programs allows exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, both within and outside the college. A number of our faculty members are part of the university-wide , in which they work in interdisciplinary clusters to study areas such as carbon electronics and personalized medicine, among others. COE extramural research support continues to expand at an impressive pace and is expected to grow further under the Engineering Expansion initiative. Programs like the $1.5 million ensure researchers have the freedom they need to pursue their important work.
Essential Job Duties
The Associate Dean for Research and Infrastructure will be the Chief Research Officer for the College of Engineering.

The Associate Dean for Research and Infrastructure will provide leadership and support for the College in advancing its research mission. The Associate Dean for Research works collaboratively with the Dean, Associate Deans, Assistant Deans, Department Heads, and faculty, staff and students to elevate the College's research programs and to integrate these programs within the strategic research goals of the College and University. This leadership includes partnering with University-level offices that develop and facilitate world-class research.

The Associate Dean will be expected to provide visionary leadership for the development and support of College research programs, empower faculty to develop cutting-edge, extramurally-funded research as well as facilitate national and international partnerships with both the public and private sectors. The successful candidate will work with researchers across campus to establish multidisciplinary research. The Associate Dean will work with faculty to develop, facilitate and attract new revenue streams to the College that will enhance its research and training programs.

The Associate Dean will manage existing college physical infrastructure ranging from shared user facilities to individual faculty labs. They will also provide leadership and vision to grow infrastructure in areas of high priority including, but not limited to, stimulating new extramural funding and coordinating with central campus offices.

The Associate Dean will serve as a member of the College's Leadership team, setting policies and strategic directions for the College, and will represent and advocate for the College in internal and external activities, including University-wide committees and working groups focused on research and research training. This position promotes and facilitates all aspects of the research activity for principal investigators in the College of Engineering. The Associate Dean oversees the College of Engineering's Office of Research Administration that is responsible for (a) working with faculty to be successful in acquiring research support; and (b) coordination with faculty and departments to maintain compliance with the guidelines and policies of the university, state and the federal government during the post-award administration of contracts. This position is responsible for overseeing the Director of Facilities and Operations within the College.

Key areas of focus for the first three years of the position include:
  • Developing and implementing a strategy for monitoring and continuous improvement of customer satisfaction of COE principal investigators
  • Supporting the COE Director of Facilities in ongoing space planning for the Engineering Expansion initiative
  • Identifying ways to increase support for, and rate of submission, of early career grants by COE investigators

This position is a full-time 12-month administrative appointment reporting to the Dean.
Other Responsibilities
Due to the heavy workload of the Dean, the Associate Dean for Research and Infrastructure will represent the Dean when necessary.
Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a relevant post-baccalaureate degree with a minimum of three (3) years or greater of related professional experience, or a relevant undergraduate degree and a minimum of five (5) years or greater of relevant experience may be substituted for the advanced degree.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Currently employed as a tenured faculty member in the NC State College of Engineering.
  • Significant experience in sponsored research programs as a principal investigator
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ideally, candidates will be at the rank of Professor, although exceptional candidates at the rank of Associate Professor could be considered
  • Deep understanding of the NC State Research Enterprise including all aspects of the grant and contract award lifecycle
  • Demonstrated research leadership in center level activities
  • Track record in successful mentoring and support of faculty members and/or research staff
  • Prior experience in the management of university staff members
  • Familiarity with principles governing share/cored research infrastructure
