The Structural Engineer - Multi-Family (a.k.a. Branch Engineer - Multi-Family) serves as a technical expert to our sales team and to our external customers, such as specifiers, building officials, and contractors in the Residential Construction - Multi-Family market segment of the Southeastern U.S. territory. They are responsible for the development of presentations, technical literature content, and test programs intended to support sales, generate new products and services, and to improve or maintain existing products or services. Overnight travel is required for workshops, ride-alongs, meetings, and conferences. We are looking for an intelligent engineer, inquisitive by nature, capable of clear communication, adept at project management, and eager create products and tools to support our sales teams' success.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING(% of Time)

Provide technical assistance for multi-family residential projects, customers, and sales team in Southeast US market through telephone conversations, e-mails, and written documentation. Serve as liaison between Simpson Strong-Tie design team and external customers. (40%)

Analyze and evaluate specification habits and trends within multi-family residential market segment in Southeast US. Utilize this information to develop and present suggestions for improved specifications; develop and present firm-specific tools (calculations, details, etc.); and provide feedback to, and collaborate with, Product Management, R&D Engineering, and Enterprise Services for new or improved product and service offerings. (30%)

Travel with outside sales to develop personal relationships with them and our customers, assist with technical support, give presentations, conduct job site calls, research/report new products/applications, and observe product installations. Our branch territory includes all or portions of 16 southeastern US states, the Caribbean, Central and South America. (15%)

Create content for and conduct presentations (public speaking) discussing building code provisions, including practical design using Simpson Strong-Tie products in front of customers like engineers, architects, builders, building officials, and our sales professionals in the multi-family residential market. Assist with training inside and outside sales on new products and technical literature. (5%)

Develop content for new literature publications such as Catalogs, Technical Bulletins, Fliers & Engineering Letters that will promote the benefits of our products and explain technical content. Check and review all technical literature prior to publication. (5%)

Special projects as assigned by the Branch Engineering Director, Engineering R&D Manager, Branch Manager or the Vice President of Engineering. (5%)

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

If you can do everything listed above, you've got what it takes. Perhaps some of the following would be helpful too:

  • Bachelors of Science in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering from a four-year college or university required.
  • Registered Civil Professional Engineer (P.E.) required.
  • M.S. degree in Civil/Structural Engineering preferred.
  • 5+ years of related structural consulting experience, including design with multi-story light-framed wood structures practicing under a licensed PE or SE.
  • Construction materials and design methods: practical working knowledge of common light-framed wood and concrete construction and associated design methodologies a must. Additional familiarity with masonry, steel (hot-rolled and CFS), and CLT construction and design methods a plus.
  • Product knowledge: general knowledge of Connectors and Lateral System product lines (Anchors, Fasteners, a CFS a plus). General understanding of product development process from idea to launch a plus.
  • Customer focus: quickly and effectively solve customer problems and maintain productive internal and external customer relationships. Readily adjust priorities to respond to pressing and changing customer needs. Recognize potentially adverse customer reactions and develop better alternatives.
  • Self-management: set priorities, goals and timelines to achieve maximum productivity. Manage multiple projects and competing priorities. Display a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner.
  • Communication: excellent communication skills; written and verbal, proof reading, professional phone demeanor. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Enthusiastic attitude and ability to work well with others.
  • Computer Skills: excellent proficiency in Microsoft software including Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook and PowerPoint. Experience with AutoCAD, BlueBeam Revu, Simpson Strong-Tie software/apps, SAP, and Smartsheet a plus.
  • Teamwork: maintain a collaborative approach in dealing with other Simpson Strong-Tie employees. Demonstrate a genuine commitment to reach mutually beneficial solutions.
  • Accountability and dependability: arrive to work on time and follow instructions, policies, and procedures. Fulfill commitments made to customers, peers, co-workers, and managers. Hold self and others accountable for measurable, high-quality, timely, and cost-effective results.
  • Reading and writing: ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond effectively to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
  • Reasoning: ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in written, mathematical or diagram form and deal with various items of abstract and/or concrete value.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job operates in both a professional office environment, customer sites and outdoor construction job sites. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers/scanners, etc. The employee occasionally works around moving mechanical parts. Noise level may be loud at times.

TRAVEL REQUIRED

This job requires 15% domestic travel.

WORK STATUS & LOCATION

This full-time, exempt position is located in McKinney, TX or Remote within the Southeast Branch States.

RELOCATION

Relocation may be considered for this position.

PAY

$90,000 - $111,000 / year

* Posted pay range is based upon national average and may vary depending on geographical work location.
