Position Summary Information

Minimum Qualifications
The A. R. Smith Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences invites applications for one tenure-track and one special faculty nine-month position in Fermentation Sciences with a start date of August 2024.

  • The candidates must have the experience necessary to instruct courses in fermented beverage production and distillation or fermented food production and safety.
  • Candidates should also be prepared to lead beverage or food production activities with students and local businesses.
  • The individuals must demonstrate a dedication to excellence in teaching, as well as a strong commitment to service and community engagement, which promotes a diverse campus community and inclusive excellence.
  • Successful candidates will be expected to participate in departmental and/or university service, hold office hours for students, and work within the Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences Department.

  • Tenure track applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Fermentation Sciences, Food Science, Beverage Science, Engineering or a related field. Candidates who are ABD will be considered, but the position requires completion of all degree requirements by July 31. While all applications will be considered, postdoctoral experience with a research focus in beverage technology or alternative proteins is encouraged. The tenure track candidate must demonstrate excellence in scholarship and is expected to initiate and sustain an externally funded undergraduate research program. Research should adhere to industry and academic best practices and incorporate a risk-based assessment.

  • Special faculty applicants must hold a M.S. in Chemistry, Fermentation Sciences, Food Science, Beverage Science, Engineering or a related field, or have relevant experience in one of those fields.

Description of the Department or Unit
The A. R. Smith Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with eight different concentrations: the American Chemical Society (ACS) Certified degree, Marketing and Business, Biochemistry, Environmental, Fermentation Sciences, Forensic Science, Individually Designed and Chemistry Secondary Education Licensure. The department also offers a BA degree in Chemistry and a Bachelor of Science degree in Fermentation Sciences. The department has 20 tenure-track faculty members, 13 non-tenure track faculty members, and approximately 350 undergraduate majors. Many of the Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences majors conduct research and disseminate their results at national, regional, and local professional meetings and in peer-reviewed publications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Instructional duties typically include a 3:3 teaching load, student advising, and curriculum development.
  • Directing honors theses, student research mentorships, and online instruction.
  • Tenure track faculty maintain an active scholarship agenda and participate in service activities.

ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
