POSITION TYPE: 12 Months, EHRA-IRIT, FLSA Exempt, 1.0 FTE

HIRING SALARY: Salary commensurate with education and experience

Description of Duties:

As the founding Director of the Colopy Family program in Entrepreneurship, you will play an instrumental role in building and scaling the program from the ground up. In this unique opportunity, your work will be critical to informing our entrepreneurship strategy as we educate our students in an entrepreneurial mindset through curricular and co-curricular activities throughout the year and across the state. Examples might include courses, summer programs, speaker series, etc.

You will work closely with the Dean of Data Science and Interdisciplinary Initiatives to define and measure key program success metrics, develop and refine programmatic initiatives to meet student needs and build a culture of entrepreneurship across NCSSM's campuses and programs. You've created educational programs in the past and are eager to apply that experience to building a new program that creates partnerships with and leverages the resources of startup communities throughout North Carolina.


In the first month, you will:

  • Conduct a thorough needs assessment to identify the resources necessary for the program.

  • Develop a detailed program outline and curriculum framework.

  • Build relationships with faculty, industry partners, and potential mentors.

  • Create a strategic plan for the program's development and implementation.

In the first six months, you will:

  • Establish partnerships with local businesses and entrepreneurial networks.

  • Initiate a mentorship program connecting students with experienced entrepreneurs.

  • Develop and begin a series of workshops and speaker events to inspire student innovation.

  • Develop a process for coordinating and supporting student innovation, including patent applications and start-up formations.

In the first year, you will:

  • Evaluate and refine the curriculum based on feedback and outcomes.

  • Ensure the program has achieved initial milestones and is on track for sustainability.

  • Expand the program's visibility and student engagement, including establishing an entrepreneurship club or incubator.

  • Secure additional funding or resources to support the growth of the program.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Knowledge of:

  • Technology startup community in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina or elsewhere

  • Secondary or postsecondary academic work; Best practices in 9-12+ educational pedagogy, techniques, trends, and issues nationally

Skilled in:

  • Management of online and in-person programs

  • Attaining organizational, institutional and area goals

  • Ensuring attention to detail while maintaining effective time and task management

  • Communicating effectively across NCSSM-Durham, NCSSM-Morganton and NCSSM-Online

Ability to:

  • Establish ownership of areas of responsibility with an aptitude to anticipate and proactively implement tasks while identifying areas of improvement, efficiencies, and solutions

  • Develop, maintain, interpret, and execute administrative procedures and practices

  • Provide direction in the design, development and administration of institution wide campus programs and initiatives to achieve established strategic plan goals.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Post-baccalaureate credentials (e.g., master's degree or higher), although a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis. Five years of related experience in program leadership and management for an entrepreneurial support organization, ideally at an academic institution.

Competitive candidates will have:

  • Experience in supporting and development within an entrepreneurial support organization within an educational institution or economic support organization

  • Experience organizing and executing online and offline programs

Vacation: EHRA IRIT employees receive 24 days per year. Leave is earned monthly.

Sick Leave: 12 days per year.

Retirement: Required participation for all employees working 3/4 time or more. Option (1) Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System requires 6% of gross salary. Employees are vested for retirement after 5 years. Option (2) The Optional Retirement Program requires 6% of gross salary. Employees in ORP are vested after 5 years of participating in ORP. As a participant in either retirement program, you are automatically covered for short-term disability (eligible after 1 year of service/no cost), long term disability (eligible after 5 year of service/no cost). Death benefit of minimum $25,000/maximum $50,000 based on previous 12 month salary (eligible after 1 year of service/no cost).

Supplemental Retirement Plans: provide an additional opportunity to help you reach your retirement goals. Supplemental Plan offerings such as a 401(k), 403(b), or 457(b) on a Roth (after-tax) or pre-tax contributions from several different vendors.

Health Insurance: Employee only coverage under the (PPO) is provided to employees that work 30 or more hours a week. The cost is determined by the type of coverage elected by the employee. Dependent coverage is available by payroll deduction.

NC Flex Plan: Plan offers , , , , , , , and . All plans are pre-tax basis / Cost varies depending on selections.

Voluntary Group Term Life Insurance: (This is an after-tax plan and is portable)

Tuition Waiver: Three courses per academic year tuition free (at any of UNC 17 campuses that offer courses) for permanent full-time employees.

Community Service: 24 hours leave credited each calendar year (prorated for part-time) unless you choose the Mentoring/ tutoring option - 1 hour each week up to a max of 36 hours that schools are in session as documented by the elected board of the local education agency or the governing authority of any non-public school.
