Job Description Summary

The Assistant Chaplain for Muslim Life at Wake Forest University provides leadership and oversight of support services and programming that responds to the cultural and social needs of Muslim students, faculty, and staff on campus. Through advocacy, development, spiritual support, and coordination of cultural, educational, and social programs and activities, Muslim Life at Wake Forest seeks to create an environment that prompts a rich cross-cultural experience for the entire campus community. The Assistant Chaplain for Muslim Life encourages Muslims and non-Muslim to identify common values and negotiate differences in public life.

Job Description

Essential Functions:
The primary tasks of this position focus on engaging and providing support to Muslim students, faculty, staff, and organizations while supporting broader Office of the Chaplain initiatives, including interfaith programming and serving on the on-call rotation.

  • Organize and coordinate religious, spiritual and social activities for Muslim students, including the Jumu'ah prayer, study circles, interfaith dialogues and other creative and worthwhile initiatives.
  • Develop opportunities for community engagements with faculty, staff, area mosques and national thought leaders in Muslim Life.
  • Oversee marketing & communication of Muslim Life events.
  • Advocate to inform divisional and university policy related to Muslim students.
  • Provide direct student support (coaching, advising, and pastoral/religious/spiritual support) to individual students, both by appointment and in cases of immediate need.
  • Plan and facilitate interfaith programming.
  • Serve on the Office of the Chaplain on-call rotation.


Other Functions:

  • Advise student groups.
  • Provide leadership and guide the student community's response in times of crisis.
  • Plan, budget, report, and evaluate Muslim Life strategy and programming in partnership with the University Chaplain.
  • Coordinate fundraising activities as required.
  • Advocate for Muslim Life and students to the University administration.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Relevant experience working with Muslim students in organizing and implementing programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Islamic sciences and active involvement in a Muslim community.
  • Strong commitment to and understanding of the needs and concerns of Muslim students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to work with and meet the needs of a diverse Muslim population at Wake Forest.
  • Ability to work with and meet the needs of a diverse American Muslim community.
  • Proficiency with Islamic sacred texts.
  • Ability to work in a multi-faith and ecumenical environment and engage with individuals from a variety of theological/ideological/spiritual perspectives, including our campus and community partners.
  • Excellent writing, verbal, and interpersonal skills as well as crisis management skills with a proven ability to work in a team environment.
  • Outstanding organizational skills with ability to handle multiple projects and priorities.
  • Creativity in imagining new initiatives and/or new ways of pursuing existing goals.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends as required.
  • Commitment to self-care and wellbeing.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Master's Degree preferred - preferably in a closely-related field or the liberal arts.
  • Basic unit in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) preferred or willingness to complete.

Accountabilities:

  • Reports to the University Chaplain.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
