Minimum Qualifications | The Department of Media, Career Studies, and Leadership Development in the Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University is seeking two full-time, tenure-track, nine-month faculty members in the Master of Library Science (MLS) program. Each position is at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor and begins in August 2024. The MLS program at Appalachian State University is developing three master's degree concentrations as we work toward American Library Association (ALA) accreditation: academic librarianship, public librarianship, and school librarianship. The school librarianship program is well-established and is currently nationally recognized by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). The teaching mode of our coursework is primarily synchronous online, with class meetings occurring during the evenings. Required Minimum Qualifications 1) Earned doctorate by June 30, 2024 in Library Science or a closely related discipline. 2) Demonstrated ability to teach core courses for the academic and/or public librarianship tracks. 3) Documented record of, or ability to build, a record of research and scholarship. 4) Documented record of, or ability to participate, in internal (within the university) and external service opportunities. |

Description of the Department or Unit | Media, Career Studies, and Leadership Development (MCL) is a department of 22 full-time faculty within the Reich College of Education, and has a firm grounding in a social constructivist philosophy of teaching. Program areas include 1) Media, Learning and Technology Design ; 2) Career and Technical Education; 3) Library Science; and 4) School Administration. The department offers BS, MA, MSA, MLS, and several concentrations in the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership in addition to certification for several K-12 areas. The department's offerings serve on campus, off campus, and online students. |
Essential Duties and Responsibilities | Each candidate for the Assistant/Associate Professor positions will teach graduate courses in a fully online format and will serve in additional, value-added capacities to the department through recruitment and retention initiatives, curriculum development and improvement, and accreditation/assessment efforts. The successful candidate will conduct research, teach, and advise students in our Library Science master's degree program. Program, department, college, university, and professional service is also expected. Although the primary instruction in the program is online, there are expectations for on-campus (Boone, NC location) service activities, meetings and other obligations. |

ABD Description |
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year. No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered. |
