Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

Position Summary
The School of Music at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Commercial Voice to work primarily with students in our recently inaugurated degree concentration in Popular Music and Technology. The Bachelor of Music in Performance, Concentration in Popular Music and Technology (PopTech) offers a course of study for young musicians focused on any genre of popular music and the intersection of this music with the world of music technology. Coursework includes classes in music technology, composition and improvisation, musicianship, and the study of global and local music history while supporting students' work in contemporary popular genres. The program also requires individual instruction on an instrument or voice.

We seek an artist/teacher colleague with experience working with students from diverse musical, social, and cultural backgrounds. The ideal candidate is a highly accomplished and versatile musician and teacher dedicated to access and excellence for all students. This candidate will be a skilled and successful teacher who prepares students for a broad range of careers in music and provides mentorship and career guidance. Additionally, the successful candidate will pursue innovative research and creative activity and recruit for a rapidly growing program in popular music and technology.

The candidate will teach studio voice lessons in a variety of commercial styles and genres. Commercial music is used here in the broadest sense, inclusive of Rock, Hip-Hop, Salsa, Gospel, Country, Folk, Electronic Dance Music, Rap, Jazz, and Musical Theatre. Additional areas of teaching and service may be determined depending on School needs, and the candidate's individual interests, qualifications, and expertise. The successful candidate will work collaboratively to further the school's commitment to engage with the global and local diversity of musical meanings, artists, and practices while forging new paths for themselves and others in a rapidly changing artistic landscape. As a member of the School of Music faculty, the Assistant Professor of Voice will contribute to ongoing equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives in the School.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master of Music and/or graduate degree in a related field
  • Significant performance experience in a variety of genres and musical styles
  • Experience teaching voice and mentoring students at the undergraduate level
  • Demonstrated experience working with and fostering engagement with a diverse student body
Preferred Qualifications
  • Equivalent professional experience or DMA
  • Emerging national reputation
  • Ability to teach other coursework (such as commercial music ensemble, studio recording/DAW, commercial music commercial voice pedagogy) depending on the candidate's expertise and the needs of the department
  • Expertise and experience in entrepreneurship, career development, and/or music technology
