Established in 1993, the School of Filmmaking combines rigorous professional training with unparalleled facilities, equipment, and resources. The Hollywood Reporter listed UNCSA as the #9 film program in the United States in its 2023 rankings. The program's mission is to train talented students for professional careers in the lm, television, and emerging entertainment industries; it stresses the collaborative nature of creative lmmaking in a modern and rigorous conservatory atmosphere. The School of Filmmaking's goal is to produce storytellers of unique vision who value and know how to use the components of the motion picture arts in all of its current and evolving forms. The school offers a BFA in Filmmaking with disciplines in Animation, Cinematography, Directing, Film Editing & Sound Design, Producing, Production Design & Visual Effects, and Screenwriting. In addition, an MFA is offered in Creative Producing and Screenwriting.
Position Summary
The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) is seeking an imaginative and innovative educator-practitioner to join our full-time faculty in the Cinematography Department of the School of Filmmaking.

The primary responsibility of the faculty member will be to teach undergraduate courses that emphasize both the technique and the art of cinematography, with a strong focus on storytelling. This is achieved through formal classroom training and one-on-one mentoring, during which cinematography students learn to craft their own unique visual approach.

Description of Responsibilities and Duties
Faculty at UNCSA are expected to engage in academic duties. These include advising and supervising students outside the classroom, attending faculty and production meetings, participating in service initiatives such as faculty governance and admissions, inviting guest artists for workshops and presentations on campus, visiting student film sets, and assisting in the development of new courses, programs, and methods of instruction.

Faculty members are encouraged to maintain professional activities to remain at the forefront of technologies and practices.
Required Qualifications
  1. An earned terminal degree in the teaching discipline, generally the MFA or a Master's degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline. Equivalent professional experience OR an equivalent combination of education and professional experience may be accepted in lieu of the academic degree.

  2. Candidates must possess professional cinematography credits in feature films, television, music videos, commercials, and/or documentary films.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess extensive professional experience in film production with multiple credits as Cinematographer, as well as prior teaching experience. Previous expertise in other cinematic roles such as Gaffer or Colorist will be of benefit. Furthermore, they should demonstrate intellectual curiosity, a profound appreciation for global cinema, a deep awareness of various arts - including literature, music, and visual arts, and an involvement in cinematic areas beyond cinematography.
Tenure Information UNCSA utilizes a multi-year contract system in lieu of tenure.
