Description of the Department or Unit
Department of Art

The Department of Art is accredited by NASAD and has 47 full-time faculty members, over 20 part-time faculty members, over 800 undergraduate majors and offers the following degrees: BFAs in Art Education, Graphic Design, Photography with concentrations in Commercial and Fine Art, and Studio Art; a BA in Art & Visual Culture with concentrations in Art History, Art Management and Studio Art; and a BS in Graphic Communications Management with concentrations in Cross Media Production and Print/Packaging Production. The Department of Art offers a range of travel opportunities including trips to the university's New York Loft and has offered study abroad trips to China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Scotland, Spain, and Taiwan. CFAA

The College of Fine and Applied Arts (CFAA) at Appalachian State University is a dynamic, transdisciplinary academic unit that emphasizes experiential learning and offers 30 undergraduate degree programs, one graduate degree program and 13 minors through its seven member departments: Applied Design; Art; Communication; Military Science and Leadership; Sustainable Development; Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment; and Theatre and Dance (https://cfaa.appstate.edu/).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Being an active member of the CFAA leadership team
  • Collaborating with faculty on a strategic vision to advance the department at the
  • College, university, regional, national, and international level
  • Recruiting, supervising, mentoring, and evaluating a multidisciplinary faculty
  • Managing department personnel
  • Managing department budget and resources
  • Continuing to develop a successful and diverse faculty and staff and foster a
  • Collaborative and collegial work environment
  • Overseeing processes involved in hiring and annual reviews for all personnel
  • Guiding curriculum development
  • Providing leadership to complete the annual assessment of program and student learning outcomes
  • Working with the department faculty to recruit qualified and diverse students to the department
  • Working with the department faculty to increase the retention and graduation rates of all students
  • Seeking and securing external funding, fostering relationships with outside funding sources.
  • Overseeing and maintaining multiple departmental facilities.
  • Supervising current renovations of some departmental facilities and the department's return once complete. The first three years of this appointment will include supervision of the Wey Hall renovation and the return to the building following the renovation. Wey Hall is where most of the Department is housed and is presently in the process of an ongoing multi-year, multi-million dollar renovation that will be finished in Fall 2025. More information .

ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
