Position Summary Information

Minimum Qualifications
The in the College of Arts and Sciences at Appalachian State University invites applications for a 9-month tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor.

We seek applicants in any area of psychology with an established record of research related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The successful candidate can affiliate with any of our four graduate programs: Clinical PsyD, Experimental Psychology MA, Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Human Resources Management MA, or School Psychology MA/SSP.

Minimum qualifications include:
  • PhD in Psychology - ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire.
  • Established program of research on topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated record of teaching experience.

Description of the Department or Unit
The Department of Psychology has 37 full-time faculty members (30 tenure-track) and serves more than 1,400 undergraduate majors and 90 graduate students across four graduate programs: Experimental Psychology MA, Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Human Resource Management MA, School Psychology MA/SSP, and Clinical Psychology PsyD. The department is dedicated to the mission and strategic plan of the university and to creating a nurturing community that welcomes, respects, and supports all constituents.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will contribute to the Department's goals in research, teaching, and service. The typical teaching load is three courses per semester. Course reductions are possible given grant funding, administrative duties, or if otherwise negotiated. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a program of empirical research including peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and external grant applications, and to involve undergraduate and graduate students in their research program.

ABD Description
No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.

ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
