Position Overview

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The NCCU School of Law Academic Success Program provides a variety of resources to ensure students develop the skills needed to succeed academically in law school. Through the tutorial program, workshops, one-on-one guidance, and readily available resources, all students have access to information to enable them to become effective and successful law students. Academic Success also operates a Lending Library. The Library is a collection of supplemental materials to help students study and prepare for exams. The materials are available to students to use without the expense of purchasing their own copies.
Primary Purpose of Position
The person hired for this position will serve in the School of Law's Academic Success Program (ASP) as a writing specialist. The Writing Specialist will work with the Associate Dean of Academic Success, Director of Academic Support, Director of Bar Preparation, and Academic Success Specialists to develop a writing skills course to teach to law students to supplement the Academic Success Curriculum. Once developed, the Academic Success Instructor will be expected to teach this class once each semester. Additionally, the Academic Success Instructor will conduct workshops and one-on-one conferences and will actively assist students to hone legal writing and analysis skills.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with students, faculty, and staff in one-on-one and in a group/classroom setting.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills; attention to detail and initiative.
  • Basic computer skills and understanding of Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet resources, and e-mail tools.
  • Ability to establish goals and maintain time lines.
  • Effective analytical, organizational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to identify and analyze complex issues, and problems and to recommend and implement solutions.
  • Exemplary oral and written communication skills.

Minimum Education/Experience
  • Masters' degree in English.
  • Previous academic success, tutoring, or teaching experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the profession.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Function Instructional
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
The Writing Specialist will develop and teach a writing skills course to supplement the Academic Success courses to address grammar, syntax, and other legal writing issues. The Writing Specialist will coordinate and conduct workshops for the ASP. The employee will conduct lectures to assist students, especially those who have need for remediation. The employee will conduct regular office hours as necessary to facilitate student success in the ASP. The employee will meet with students who have either been identified by their professors or self-identified with deficits in writing skills.
Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
The Writing Specialist will maintain and submit accurate records of services rendered for ASP recordkeeping. The employee will plan, organize, and administer various projects as designated by the Associate Dean of Academic Success. The employee will maintain confidentiality when performing duties and responsibilities of the position.
Function Public Service
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
The Writing Specialist will serve on various Law School and University committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues. Participate in campus and community events. The employee will demonstrate an overall sensitivity and understanding of diversity throughout the execution of job duties. The employee will communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues on matters regarding ASP initiatives and activities. The employee will use independent judgment and take initiative in solving problems and making decisions.
