UNCSA follows the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) guidelines for faculty credentialing. The successful candidate will be required to submit a curriculum vitae, official transcripts of earned degrees, and/or substantiating documentation of experiential qualifications as a condition of employment.

Pursuant to UNCSA policy, as a condition of employment the University must obtain a criminal background report and determine that the nature and seriousness of any criminal offenses do not render employment with the University inappropriate.

Position Summary
The UNCSA School of Drama is looking for a teacher of acting and directing with expertise in the literature/performance history of one or more historically marginalized groups, for example Indigenous theater and performance, Latinx Theater traditions, Queer theater history and traditions, Asian performance traditions, etc. Preference for a teacher who synthesizes multiple methodologies into their own unique approach to acting, with a strong emphasis on text analysis AND physical approaches to acting and character.

UNCSA School of Drama seeks candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to, and will take an active role in, enhancing diversity, inclusion, and equity across the University, including fostering a sense of community and belonging for students. Please include specific and detailed information about how you have worked to enhance diversity and inclusion through your teaching practices, research, and/or performance experiences within the industry or university setting.
Description of Responsibilities and Duties
While we recognize that no single candidate will possess all of the following, the ideal candidate to teach acting and directing will have:

  • Significant expertise in literature/performance history of one or more historically marginalized groups, e.g. Indigenous theater and performance, Latinx Theatre traditions, Queer theater history and traditions, Asian performance traditions, etc.
  • Preference for a teacher who synthesizes multiple methodologies into their own unique approach to acting, with a strong emphasis on text analysis AND physical approaches to acting and character
  • Knowledge of the current trends and transformations in the professional landscape and industries, especially around questions of representation in casting and other matters relating to the industry's response to concerns around equity, inclusion and belonging that have existed in the industry historically, and have been more fully centered since the summer of 2020
  • Ability to direct workshop and mainstage productions; previous professional or college directing experience useful
  • A demonstrable track record of advancing equity, inclusion, and social justice through their teaching and creative practice
  • Excellent communicator

Required Qualifications
The UNCSA School of Drama recognizes that not all teaching is done in a traditional classroom setting and we are able to hire artists based on their work experience; therefore, we encourage all that are interested to apply.

Faculty teaching undergraduate level courses must possess: Earned doctorate/master's degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline or earned master's degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline OR Equivalent professional/experiential qualifications OR Equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Tenure Information UNCSA utilizes a multi-year contract system in lieu of tenure.
