Description of primary duties and responsibilities:

Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

Fayetteville State University's Office of College Access Programs is designed to provide low-income/potential first-generation college students (enrolled in grades 6-12) with academic support services that will enhance their academic skills, thereby ensuring that these students will complete high school and enroll in and complete programs of postsecondary education.

The mission of GEAR UP is to prepare middle and high school students for college through academic preparation programs and scholarships for students, professional development activities for educators, and college access information for students and parents. A total of 1,500 students are served by the GEAR UP Program in Cumberland County at eight target schools.

Description of Work Continued:

Primary Purpose of the Position:

The primary purpose of this position is to provide academic support and serve as a liaison at a GEAR UP target school to improve academic mindsets and prepare low-income/first-generation students for post-secondary education.

Duties and Responsibilities
Plan and organize GEAR UP services at local middle school to create a college-going culture and partner with target schools to coordinate college, cultural and educational field trips that are aligned with the curriculum (career and college readiness).

Recruit participants to participate in GEAR UP sponsored activities; maintain files on participants; track services using Cayen database; and submit monthly reports.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

A Bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience.

Knowledge skills and abilities:

Must be able to relate to low-income/potential first-generation students; ability to follow directions to implement evidence-based program; excellent organizational skills to document services accurately and meet deadlines; effective interpersonal and oral communication skills; and an interest in working with high school students. Applicants must have the temperament for engaging middle and high school students.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in science, math, education, English, communications, business administration, social sciences or related field. A minimum of two years of teaching, advising, recruitment, counseling, coaching or tutoring experience. Two years of proven experience working with youth (13-21).
