Position Overview

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Mathematics and Physics within the College of Arts and Sciences promotes North Carolina Central University’s commitment to excellence in instruction, research, and service offering programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Science degree and the Master of Science degree each in mathematics and in physics. In addition, the Department offers all General Education Curriculum courses in mathematics as well as in physics.

Primary Purpose of Position
Under direction of Associate Dean for College of Health and Sciences (CHAS), the Lead Professional Coach/Coordinator of the STEM Learning Center for Mathematics and Science Student Academic Support Services is responsible for programming academic support services for the STEM Learning Center that provide students with additional learning assistance in outside of the classroom. The STEM Center Lead Professional Coach is responsible for meeting overall program objectives of the NCCU STEM Learning Center
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of effective practices in academic support services.

Knowledge of institutional rules and regulations relating to the development of college level student academic support programs.

Knowledge of leadership and management principles and techniques

Knowledge of due process for resolving student and staff complaints or issues.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

Ability to build and maintain collaborative internal and external relationships with broad constituencies.

Ability to use appropriate technology for data tracking and report presenting.

Ability to implement innovation in education support processes.

Ability to supervise area academic coaches, professional tutors, and student workers.

Ability to relate to and empathize with the needs of a diverse student population.

Ability to exercise group leadership skills, which emphasize collaboration, consensus building, conflict resolution, and problem solving.

Minimum Education/Experience

Master’s degree from an accredited college/university, preferably in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or Science Education.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Direct programming academic support services in mathematics and science including developing, planning, goal setting, implementation, evaluation and accountability for the NCCU STEM Learning Center.

Develop and implement processes for academic support services such as mandatory learning support for students in developmental-level and gateway courses.

Conduct academic and mathematics and science learning workshops skills building workshops to students.

Develop and implement a tracking and assessment system for student use of support services.

Hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate the work performance of assigned STEM Learning Center personnel

Develop and implement regular training and workshops for academic support services staff and student peer tutors and learning assistants.

Collect, process, analyze, and interpret program data and make program decisions based on data.

Provides regular reports for assessment and planning purposes to Assistant Dean of CHAS.

Develops and administers the budget for programs related to academic support services of the STEM Learning Center.

Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Day-to-day management of professional academic tutors; ensure high quality academic tutoring services; work with academic programs and student support units as appropriate to ensure student progression. Supervise and coordinate academic support services such as tutoring, supplemental instruction, success and math labs, and other student academic learning services outside of the classroom.
Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Write and collaborate on grant proposals as part of a team focused on academic success in mathematics and science.Perform other related activities as assigned per Assistant Dean of CHAS.
