Davidson College invites applications for an Artist Associate who will serve as Director of Choral Activities for academic years 2022-23 and 2023-24, to begin July 1, 2022. This is a full-time, non-tenure track appointment with benefits, with the possibility of renewal.

We seek a conductor who will coordinate all aspects of the choral program, including performances, rehearsals, auditions, the choral library, internal and external recruitment, and the choral budget. Normally the Director of Choral Activities oversees two ensembles (one an auditioned 25-35 member student group, the other a 60-100 member group consisting of both students and community members) and a winter tour that takes place in early January (contingent depending upon pandemic conditions), along with duties as indicated below.

Duties:

Along with directing these two ensembles, the candidate will serve as an advisor for student-run groups affiliated with the music department, and have additional teaching duties in one or more of the following areas, depending on the candidate's expertise: an additional student group that performs specialized ensembles (e.g., gospel choir or shape note hymnody), vocal instruction (individual and/or class), aural skills, diction, opera theater workshop, or musical theater productions. Additional duties include music programming, ordering and cataloguing music, coordinating accompanist's schedule, coordinating programs with other divisions across the college, and contracting instrumentalists. The Director of Choral Activities will also be responsible for recruiting student musicians in coordination with the Admissions and Music Departments (recruiting primarily involves communication with applicants and prospective applicants through email and Zoom).

Qualifications:

Master's degree in music, preferably in choral conducting, required; doctoral degree in choral conducting preferred. Significant experience developing choral programs and conducting experience can substitute for a terminal degree. Preference given to candidates with at least 3 years of choral conducting experience and a demonstrable ability to develop a thriving and successful choral program.

Review of applications begins January 5, 2022; open until filled.

Application:

Apply online via . The application should include a cover letter that describes your choral conducting experience, a statement explaining your understanding of how your work with the choral ensembles might contribute to Davidson's , a C.V, and contact information for 2 references. The system will automate an email to your references to upload a confidential letter of recommendation. Applications should also include video footage, ideally with the camera facing the conductor, with at least two contrasting styles of repertoire. Queries may be directed to Neil Lerner, Chair, Department of Music, .
