Position Information

Position Title First Year Acting and Directing Faculty Member
Position Number 035218
School/Department Information
The University of North Carolina School of the Arts is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply and will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender expression, gender identity, age, sexual orientation, genetic information, status as an individual with a disability or status as a protected veteran.

The University of North Carolina School of the Arts School of Drama, recently ranked the 4th best Drama program in the world by The Hollywood Reporter, seeks to create an equitable and diverse training environment for the entertainment industry where each individual student feels a strong sense of belonging while on campus, and fully prepared to enter the industry as an artist and as a business person upon graduation. With equal emphasis on working on camera, scripted and devised stage work, and intensive preparation for the business of entertainment, graduates leave positioned for both artistic and professional success.

Position Summary
The School of Drama at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts invites applications for a full-time position as Assistant/Associate Professor of Acting and Directing, beginning in the 2022-23 academic year. We seek a dynamic teacher of acting and directing who is prepared to propose a first year acting sequence that is not Stanislavski based, but instead references ritual and storytelling as the beginning of human performance, is physically oriented but still takes text into account, and can cite specific influences in their methodology from the history of world performance.

The UNCSA School of Drama believes the first year acting and directing curriculum is the foundation upon which the rest of the progression is built. As of 2020, we are comprised of majority BIPOC students, making it even more imperative that we explore schools of thought outside of the western canon. We are dedicated to cultivating actors who are well-versed in approaches that transcend Eurocentric models. With an increasing non-binary and transgender community, we are devoted to maintaining a safe space for our LGBTQIA+ students and faculty.

UNCSA's top priority is to foster a sense of trust between students, faculty and staff that encourages everyone to bring forward their most authentic selves and therefore their most authentic art. We are committed to creating safe spaces that do not silence or repress any individual or community. UNCSA Drama is fundamentally changing aspects of the program that perpetuate discriminatory behavior, through such acts as the excavation of internalized biases as well as assessing the revered systems and techniques of theatrical training that cater to privileged, white, cis, male, abled bodies. UNCSA's administration has created a directive for more transdisciplinary work ().

Description of Responsibilities and Duties
A strong candidate's first year acting sequence may encompass some devising as an approach to helping the actor articulate the self as performer, but ultimately should be able to provide the actors skills that will be relevant in texted work, devised work, and camera work. This position would also help guide our two first-year directing students, with the understanding that we do not impose a process or aesthetic on the student director, but rather encourage an artistic impulse. We are committed to building the whole artist from the ground up, and we do not believe we have to start by tearing them down. We also believe that student actors and directors will thrive when they immediately encounter material and pedagogies which they can personally relate to on a cultural level.

In addition the position will mentor and advise undergraduate students, direct in the school's production season, and serve on various internal and University-wide committees to further initiatives in shared governance.
Required Qualifications
The UNCSA School of Drama recognizes that not all teaching is done in a traditional classroom setting and we are able to hire artists based on their work experience; therefore, we encourage all that are interested to apply.

Faculty teaching undergraduate level courses must possess: Earned doctorate/master's degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline or earned master's degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline OR Equivalent professional/experiential qualifications OR Equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a dedication and passion for teaching, and enjoy working collaboratively.
Tenure Information UNCSA utilizes a multi-year contract system in lieu of tenure.
