Position Summary
The University of North Carolina School of the Arts School of Drama invites any individual to fill a full-time position as Assistant/Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Approaches to Performance, beginning in the academic year 2022-2023. At UNCSA, we strive to create a safe environment, one that allows people from all walks of life to thrive. Education and art-making can be transformational forces for change and we are working so that change leads toward justice. UNCSA's top priority is to foster a sense of trust between students, faculty and staff that encourages everyone to bring forward their most authentic selves and therefore their most authentic art. We are committed to creating safe spaces that do not silence or repress any individual or community. UNCSA Drama is fundamentally changing aspects of the program that perpetuate discriminatory behavior, through such acts as the excavation of internalized biases as well as assessing the revered systems and techniques of theatrical training that cater to privileged, white, cis, male, abled bodies.
Description of Responsibilities and Duties
This multi-year contract faculty position will contribute to the UNCSA School of Drama in three categories: Teaching, Creative Activity/Research, and Service.
  1. Teaching- Duties will in part be assigned according to the strengths and interests of the person appointed to the position. Classes may include undergraduate acting and/or directing classes. A strong foundation in physical acting techniques is highly desirable, as the school seeks to de-center the dominant pedagogies of American acting training in its curriculum and create a more world focused view of how to train the student actor. In teaching directing, a candidate experienced in deconstructing/reimagining existing works and creating highly conceptual projects that experiment with form and traditional theatrical vocabulary is preferred. In conjunction with the UNCSA Administration's directive for more trans-disciplinary work on campus (), this full-time faculty position aims to help lead the School of Drama, in collaboration with other Drama faculty members, in its contributions to the expansion of trans-disciplinary arts practice on campus in conjunction with UNCSA's four other art schools (Dance, Filmmaking, Music, Design and Production) as well as with the Division of Liberal Arts and the High School Academic Program. One example of a program that is still growing, and with which this position will intersect, is the Studio For Creative Practice. Housed in the Division of Liberal Arts at UNCSA, using Responsive Pedagogy as a core principle, the Studio brings students together from all the arts schools in a course designed to promote Inquiry into the creative process, with the opportunity to create new works of art from their research. The ideal candidate will have a track record of emphasizing equitable creative inquiry and responsive pedagogies over traditional teacher-centered pedagogical practices. Facility in multiple disciplines (theater, dance, music, film, design, augmented/virtual reality and other new media) and knowledge and experience in non-Western performance methods of performance are also highly desirable
  2. Creative Activity/Research- Continued professional activity and creative research within the entertainment industry, as well as dedicated research in reimagining pedagogical structures
  3. Service- Mentor and advise undergraduate students majoring in Acting or Directing; serve on various internal and University-wide committees to further initiatives in shared governance, direct and/or supervise student work in the School of Drama production program.

The UNCSA School of Drama recognizes that not all teaching is done in a traditional classroom setting and we are able to hire artists based on their work experience; therefore, we encourage all that are interested to apply.
