Position Summary Information

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Minimum
Bachelors' Degree required. At least 2 years experience in student services, employee recruiting experience, or human resources.
Excellent problem solving, oral and written communication skills, and mathematical acumen; ability to interpret and implement policy and procedures; and ability to work in a fast-paced team atmosphere.
Technical proficiency and experience with Google, internet/social media marketing, and database management, Banner.
Commitment to student success with intention to issues of diversity, inclusion, and opportunity.
Ability to manage multiple tasks in a changing environment that is team-driven, diverse, fast-paced, and innovative.
A commitment to advancing students' holistic development, particularly as it relates to career issues, and a level of enthusiasm, energy, and creativity are essential to providing effective related programs.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills for one-on-one and group interaction with various constituencies including students, faculty, parents, and administrators.
Ability to develop and foster strong professional relationships with faculty, staff, and employers.
Strong organization, research, planning, and problem-solving skills.
Marketing experience and/or the ability to develop and implement effective strategies for promoting and increasing student involvement in office programs and services.

Experience counseling or advising students and/or employees in a university setting. Experience supervising student employees in a collegiate setting.
Demonstrated experience of career development issues for college students and alumni, and an ability to provide counseling on these issues in individual and group settings.
Knowledge of and experience using Handshake and/or TimeClock.
Experience processing work approvals including I-9 E-verification.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Implements Job Location Development (JLD) by creating on and off-campus employment opportunities for a student body of over 20,000 students at Appalachian State University.
  • Serves as the point of contact for up to 6000 on-campus student employees, their families, and 200+ staff and faculty regarding issues of student temporary employment.
  • Supervises and supports the Coordinator of Student Employment and Internships in the approval and authorization of student temporary employment paperwork; the Coordinator's duties include answering employment questions, troubleshooting issues for resolution, negotiating issues with payroll, departmental supervisors, and involving additional support persons when necessary, coordinating Odd Jobs and part-time employment postings via the career management system, Handshake, and via the Odd Job List, the utilization of Docuware, serving as the Banner liaison, and communicating with Human Resource Services.
  • Identifies employment sites and positions that meet the specific federal guidelines for the FWS program, maintains the FWS database, and assists students and supervisors in selection and hiring process for approximately 600 FWS students each year.
  • Coordinates with the Office of Financial Aid to conduct an annual evaluation of the FWS program identifying strengths, areas for improvement, and proposed solutions for challenges.
  • Monitors, assembles, reviews, and prepares the Community Service and JLD Tracking portions of the FISAP report to support Financial Aid and the Controller's office in the annual evaluation and reporting on FWS ensuring award support and potential increases
  • Manages and assists supervisors with job descriptions, interviewing, and selection to ensure that all student employment job descriptions are aligned with the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Career Readiness Competencies and the requirements of FWS regulations, and that they are following all institution, state, and federal employment guidelines.
  • Provides consultation to supervisors seeking advice on managing students for success; provides assistance to students and supervisors for conflict resolution when needed.
  • Provides training and outreach programming to student employees to enhance their understanding of transferable skills as they relate to NACE competencies and the importance of student employment to their overall professional development.
  • Utilizing resources and departments across campus, provides workshops and programming to train supervisors across campus in topics around the supervision, hiring, and retention of student employees. Integrates the NACE Career Competencies and AppGrows programming to demonstrate student employment as a high impact practice.

  • Plans and hosts events for students including Fall and Semester Student Employee Appreciation and Part-Time Jobs Fairs alongside the Coordinator for Student Employment.

  • Ensures Student Employment initiatives are in alignment with overall Career Development Center goals and participate in all Career Development Center events.
  • Maintains ongoing professional development via involvement with professional associations such as the Southeastern Association of Student Employment (SASEA) and National Student Employment Association (NSEA).
  • Completes any additional duties as directed by the Director of the Career Development
  • Center and the Associate Director of Student Employment and Internships.
