Mechanical Engineer, R&D

General Information:

Hitachi Energy is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with a minimum background or strong interest in R&D design, integration of prototypes and systems related to the heavy-duty charging infrastructure. Candidate will be required to support in all stages of the product development lifecycle. The ability to adapt to a flexible and fast-paced environment is key to successfully performing in this role.  Seeking someone passionate in emerging technologies for transportation fleet electrification looking to join the growing and diversified eMobility team within Hitachi Energy.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop and test mechanical components for electric vehicle DC fast charging infrastructure ensuring product meets all requirements.
  • Conduct hands on component analysis, lab equipment and test setup, and prototype assembly activities in support of R&D project activities
  • Create 3D models and assembly CAD models
  • Prepare mechanical piece part and assembly design drawings conforming to all applicable regulations and standards.
  • Perform product validation and verification testing of complete system and subsystem at the concept, prototype and production phases of development.
  • Participate in agency certification and approval process
  • Work collaboratively with manufacturing teams/partners to ensure smooth transition of product to production
  • Manage R&D work packages in view of date, cost and quality aspects
  • Define and perform Factory Acceptance Tests of mechanical components and systems
  • Coordinates directly with suppliers and with Supply chain peers on reception and procurement of parts, components and equipment from partners and or external vendors.

Your Background:

  • Bachelor's Degree in mechanical engineering required or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job
  • Candidate must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for Hitachi Energy in the United States.
  • 2 - 3 years experience designing and developing electro-mechanical systems
  • Demonstrated experience or certification in:
    • Solidworks Mechanical Design
    • Solidworks Sheet Metal
    • Solidworks Surfacing
    • Solidworks Assembly
  • Experience supporting FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)
  • Understanding of DFM (Design for Manufacturing), DFA (Design for Assembly) and DFS (Design for Serviceability) principles.
  • Experience defining and documenting system and architecture requirements for complex electro-mechanical solutions.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize, identify root causes & take corrective actions.
  • Strong interest in Engineering Product Development and Design Validation.
  • A proactive attitude for individual and team tasks to be completed on time with desired results
  • Willingness to openly engage a multidisciplinary team to achieve goals and resolve problems
  • Ability to learn and utilize lab equipment and relevant software.
  • Strong English written and verbal skills
  • Experience with C/C++ or Phyton programming would be an advantage.
  • Solidworks certification. 
  • Knowledge on the fabrication of parts and assemblies for manufacturing.
  • Experience and understanding in the principles of stress analysis and finite element method.

Travel Requirements:

  • Up to 50% - mainly in support of R&D Lab activities in Monroe, GA
